District Governor Lion Ron Clarke and his wife Doris thank all Lions, partners, guests and friends for the support at the 33rd Annual Convention weekend of  Saturday 8th March 2008 with special thanks to Lion President Alan Davies, and all members of the host club, Glantawe Lions Club. 

A successful weekend headed up by the 2008 Convention Officer Lion Laurence Morrissey.

The 33rd Annual  Convention weekend of Lions District 105w hosted by Glantawe Lions Club started on Friday 7th March at the Manor Park Country Hotel, Swansea. The host night revelers dressed up for a 'Way out West' themed evening with cowboys and salon girls in abundance, for a 'Wild-W-Time' in the company of International guest Lion Roger and his wife Lion Rosemary who travelled from Washington to be with the Lions of District 105w throughout the weekend.

Prior to Convention business session on Saturday 8th March, the Morriston RFC choir with conductor Glyn Williams, gave the assembling convention goers a superb performance before Sergeant-at-Arms Lion Byron introduced Convention Chairman, District Governor Lion Ron Clarke and Past International Director Lion Roger Richert. A message of apology was received Saturday morning from Councillor Susan Waller, Lord Mayor, City and County of Swansea due to the severe illness of her consort that morning.


Messages of best wishes were received from the office of Her Majesty the Queen, from Chairman of Council, Lion Jeff Byers and many cards from Lion friends. The number of delegates attending was 48 and Clubs attending 29. The flag ceremony was conducted by Pontardawe Air Cadets under command of Flying Officer, Steve Todd.


Convention worked through the Business Session of Nominations and Resolutions. Vice District Governor Lion Surinder Malhotra was elected District Governor 2008-2009 and Convention 2009 will be hosted by Zone J Clubs at Bristol.


The District Peace Poster winner, Yahna sponsored by Maesteg Lions Club was introduced to Convention by Peace Poster Officer Lion Frieda Cox. The Young Ambassadors Competition was enthusiastically organised by Lion Tony Buchan and PID Lion Roger presented the District Young Ambassadors Award to Adam, sponsored by the Lions Club of Ammanford. Adam addressed Convention with his personal story.

Julie Hamlen, daughter of the late Lion Bob and Joy Cook made three cheque presentations from the Bob Cook Memorial Trust.



In addition to the International Presidents Certificates, the DG presented personal Certificates of Appreciation to several Lions as well as awarding medals to deserving Lion members.


Convention received a Tacade presentation from Lion Margaret Riley 105C; Campaign Sightfirst II presentation by Lion Surinder Malhotra: a Personal Energy Transportation (PET) presentation of basic mobility possibilities for handicapped people in African countries by Lion David McKirdy and a Leadership presentation by Lion Bill O'Neill.

Our International guest PID Roger Richert gave a rousing keynote address of work within Lions Clubs International, the present and our future as the world's largest Service Club organisation. DG Ron seen presenting a gift from the District to Roger and Rosemary.


With Convention business over, it was now time to party with one hundred and seventy Lions and guests sitting  down to the Banquet and Ball with music by Noel West. Guests from District Governor Lion Ron's previous District at EA took wine as a trial run for their own Convention the following weekend.


Lion Roger Richert conducted a one hour session on Sunday morning for those that welcomed news from LCI in the States.


A great weekend of fun, friendship and fellowship ................ that's Lionism.
