2011-2012 Lions 5 Nations Under 14s Football Competition

District Draw for 2011 - 2012 Season

Preliminary Round - Llantwit Major (District Holders) v Maesteg

1st Round - Highworth (8) v Ross-on-Wye (2) and Frome (2) v Llantwit Major (3)

District Final at Llantwit Major Sunday 29 January 2012  Llantwit Major (9) v Highworth (1)

Congratulations to the Llantwit Major team for winning the District Final 2012 and good luck in the next Southern Section round scheduled for April/May 2012.

Last season 3 teams represented the District with Llantwit Major winning the District Final against Frome having knocked Leominster out in the previous round, Llantwit went on to reach the Quarter Final only to succumb to Shirley from Birmingham.  The competition is open to U14s Boys Teams registered in either the English or Welsh Football Associations with an entry fee of £25.  Some members may feel that this is an expensive competition that requires a large club to sponsor, this cannot farther from the truth.  This year the winning team was sponsored by Darent Valley Lions Club who only have 6 members.  It is however recognised that the away team incurs considerable expense and in recognition of this the MD and the District have both agreed to contribute a third each to offset the cost of transport.  This is an excellent youth competition that includes many people as well as the boys themselves.  It is a good opportunity to meet people and promote Lionism and there is the great scope in publicising the competition in the local press.  It gives the boys the chance to play football against teams from other parts of the country.  Entry forms can be located below. It would be good to see the number of teams grow from this year to provide stiffer competition to Llantwit Major in the defence of their title.

Sunday 28th February 2010, defending District Champions, Llantwit Major Under 14's visited Frome to play Frome Collegians Under 14's in the District final. The weather stayed almost dry and after some near misses at both ends with some very good goal keeping skills on display. It shaped up to be a hard fought game between 2 very determined sides. After 20 minutes the break through came, a shot parried by the Frome keeper fell to the Llantwit winger whose prompt cross was headed into the net. This led to a session with Llantwit getting the upper hand with two very good goals in the next 5 minutes. Half time score 3-0 to Llantwit.
After the break Frome came out with passion and skill which made the holders work hard to keep the advantage. Even when pegged back they were dangerous and on one breakaway, a shot again parried by the excellent Frome keeper fell to the feet of the on coming forward to tap in for the 4th Llantwit goal. Frome far from being disheartened kept attacking and finally with the last kick of the match scored a very fine goal with a shot from the edge of the box.

Final score Frome 1 Llantwit 4.

The boys where all rewarded by a fine spread provided by Frome Lions Club at their meeting place, the Rugby Club where the winners were presented with medals and the runners-up with certificates by 2ndVDG Lion Laurence.

Llantwiit went on to beat Fairlop in the 3rd round but lost to Shirley in the 4th round 0-3.

Through our youth programmes we are all dedicated to providing challenges and opportunities for youngsters that they would not otherwise enjoy. One such opportunity is the Lions Youth Football Competition.

Any “Under 14” boys team playing in its local league, and affiliated to its County FA, can represent its local Lions Club in this knock-out competition.

Initial games are drawn on a regional basis so as to reduce travelling time and costs, moving farther a field as the rounds progress.

By organising early rounds on a regional basis each District has its own District Cup with eventually the Multiple District semi-finals and Final being staged at prestigious professional stadiums.

In the past we have played at the City Ground, Nottingham Forest, Walsall, Ipswich Town, Port Vale, Telford United & Burton Albion. In 2010, both semi-finals were played on Sunday 9th May 2010, the Northern semi was at Leeds United Training Ground and the Southern semi at Abingdon Town FC. The final was played on Sunday 23rd May 2010 at Rushenden & Diamonds FC. It is our expectation to obtain the use of similar prestigous venues in future.

The Competition will be run in accordance with the Constitution and Rules lodged with the Football Associations of England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Eire, FIFA and UEFA.

Every Lions Club competing are given Lions’ MD PR leaflets to distribute to players’ families & Football Club management & supporters. This is a great opportunity for your Club to get PR &, potentially, new members.

Please do not miss out – support the Youth Football Competition & enter a team next year. Details
