Hope for Tomorrow is a national cancer charity, which helps those with cancer, their families and dependents cope with the reality of the situation. Funds raised will go towards the Mobile Chemotherapy Unit project.

Support the mobile chemotherapy units appeal

Lions Clubs throughout the District are being urged to contribute towards the cost of setting up mobile chemotherapy units to visit strategic towns or villages.  The units will treat cancer patients with chemotherapy, thus avoiding lengthy and expensive visits to remote treatment centres.

The idea comes from Christine Mills, founder of Hope for Tomorrow who addressed District Convention in March 2009.

Lion Tony Buchan, 2009-2010 District Advisor for 'Hope for Tomorrow' actively encouraged cash support from clubs in the District, to fund new mobile chemotherapy units.

"I am passionate about Hope for Tomorrow and its aims," said Lion Tony.  "too many of us are affected either directly or indirectly by cancer.  But if we can help alleviate the stress that long district travelling to chemotherapy treatments can cause, then we must do so."

Already two mobile units are operational and a third is expected to be completed by the year's end.

The ultimate aim for Hope for Tomorrow is to have a mobile chemotherapy unit based at all 38 oncology centres in the UK. One unit, which costs £150,000 to set up, can treat 20 patients a day.

From July 2010 Lion Tony has advised of a slight change in respect of the promotion of Mobile Chemotherapy and Mobile Oncology Units within our District. As many of you, especially within the Welsh side of the District, will be aware, Tenovus have been approaching clubs within Wales with a view to those clubs supporting their Mobile Oncology 'Bus'.  After discussion as to how best to promote both 'Hope for Tomorrow' and 'Tenovus', it has been decided that I will assume the role of District Advisor - Mobile Chemotherapy Units/Mobile Oncology Units and promote both charities throughout our District – a title which reflects the slightly different approach taken by each charity.  Ultimately, we have to be fair to both the charities and all the clubs in the District by giving them a clear choice as to whom they wish to support. My updates will therefore, reflect both charities in the future.
